Roll-off dumpster rental in Elkhorn
Approx. 31 road miles east of Janesville, around 45 minutes — Highway 11 and Highway 14 east, then I-43 north to Highway 67.
Elkhorn is Highway 14 and I-43 from the yard, about 45 minutes to the courthouse square, and next morning as a rule. It is the county seat — "host community for governance and justice," as the city's own plan puts it — and was the fastest-growing municipality in Walworth County in the 2000s, up 38% to just over 10,000.
The median house was built in 1986 and a significant share is pre-war, so the work is 1990s–2000s subdivision remodels, estate cleanouts in the old core and fit-outs in the Elkhorn Business Park. Elkhorn also licenses haulers, and we explain that plainly below.
Local knowledge
Getting our bearings in Elkhorn
Knowing a city properly is the difference between covering it and showing up with the right box.
- The county seat — I-43 and Highway 12 converge on the city; the Walworth County Fairgrounds host the county fair.
- Housing — median year built 1986, units grew from 2,202 in 1990 to 4,043 in 2010, and "a significant percentage" are pre-WWII (comprehensive plan).
- Employment — educational services (about 1,000 jobs), manufacturing (826), health care (446); the Elkhorn Business Park is the main employment district, with a legacy of band-instrument making.
- LRS (formerly Badgerland Disposal) collects the carts under city contract with two free bulk items a month, and refuses construction debris at the curb.
- Public Works at the City Garage, 401 East Centralia Street, (262) 723-2223; City Hall on (262) 723-2219.

What comes out of Elkhorn properties
Kitchens, baths, roofs and decks in 1990s and 2000s houses in 15s and 20s, estate cleanouts in the old core in 20s and 30s. Code 11.06(10) bars "construction and/or demolition materials, such as large amounts of stone, concrete, lumber, roofing materials, earth or sod" at the curb, and 11.06(12) says loose demolition or remodeling material "will not be collected by the City and must be arranged by the resident directly with the refuse hauler." The compost site at 401 East Centralia is free for residents but "commercial contractors are prohibited."

Permits, placement and who may haul in Elkhorn
On your own property: Code 10.10 Portable Storage Containers allows one container per property, up to 10 by 20 by 10 feet, on asphalt or concrete, 5 feet from property lines and building walls, with a permit if it stays more than 14 consecutive days and a cap of 30 days per calendar year. Plan a job longer than two weeks around that.
In the street: 8.02.6 prohibits obstructing any street, alley or sidewalk, with an exception for building materials for a period the Public Works Operations Manager authorizes (no more than half the sidewalk or a third of a travel lane). 8.02.7 is a Street Privilege Permit — $25 plus actual costs, proof of liability insurance naming the City, no more than a third of the street, lit at night, up to 30 days from the Operations Manager and longer only from the Council, all lapsing at three months.
Who may haul — the rule that matters: 11.06(15) says "no hauler shall engage in the business of solid waste and recycling collection with[out] first obtaining a license from the City" — a calendar-year licence renewed each December, with Grade 2 for "a hauler providing occasional service for the collection and disposal of demolition and construction debris" at $100 a year, and a penalty of $25 to $250 a day (11.06(16)). Residential cart collection is a municipal enterprise (11.06(2)); commercial and multifamily sites use private contractors (11.06(3)). The City licenses haulers, and we hold our Elkhorn licence.
Summarized from the city's published code and web pages as read in October 2026. Codes change — confirm with the department listed before you rely on it.
How it works
Booking a dumpster in Elkhorn
Booking a container here takes one phone call and about five minutes.
- 1
Call and tell us the job
One short conversation. We ask what you are clearing, where the container needs to sit, and how much room the driveway or lot gives us. No forms, no waiting on an email.
- 2
We size it and quote it flat
You get one number covering delivery, the 7-day rental, pickup, disposal and a stated tonnage allowance. If a smaller box does the job we will say so. If it is shingles or concrete, we say up front that it needs its own box.
- 3
Delivered where you want it
The driver walks the spot with you and sets the container square on the driveway, lot or job site, boards under the rails. Same-day in Janesville if you called before noon.
- 4
Load at your own pace
Keep it level with the top rail and keep the banned items out — tires, appliances, electronics, batteries, oil, yard waste in a mixed load. Need a swap mid-job or an early pickup? One call and we are on it.
- 5
We haul it and sort it right
Clean concrete, brick and brush go to the Clean Fill Facility, appliances and metal to the landfill's recycling areas, and the rest to the licensed landfill for that county. You get your driveway back the way you left it.

Local answers
Dumpster rental in Elkhorn — common questions
Is Elkhorn same-day or next-day?
Next morning as a rule — about 45 minutes across Highway 14 and I-43.
Can a dumpster sit in the street in Elkhorn?
Under a $25 Street Privilege Permit from Public Works with insurance and night lighting, up to 30 days. On your own driveway, the code allows one container on asphalt or concrete and wants a permit after 14 days.
Does Elkhorn restrict who can supply a roll-off?
Yes — 11.06(15) requires a City hauler licence, Grade 2 for construction and demolition work at $100 a year. We hold our Elkhorn licence.
Will LRS take my remodel debris on bulk day?
No. The city and LRS both refuse construction debris at the curb, and the code says loose remodeling material must be arranged with a hauler. That is a container.
