The 30 yard container in Janesville
The 30 yard takes up the same 22 by 7.5 feet of ground as the 20 — the extra volume is all height. That makes it the natural choice when a job is producing a lot of bulky material but the site has no more room: a whole-house gut on a pre-war street in Janesville or Fort Atkinson, a student-rental block turned over in Whitewater, a shop refit on Milton Avenue.
Because the sides are six feet high, most of what goes in it is carried or thrown rather than dropped in from a wheelbarrow. Contractors with a skid steer or a crew do not mind; a homeowner working alone usually prefers two 20s.
Whole-house gut jobs, new builds and big roofs
Renovations that take a house back to the studs fill a 30 in a hurry: every cabinet, every door, the drywall from every room. Large roofing jobs — double-layer tear-offs on the older housing stock — use the 30 for its higher weight allowance as much as for the volume, and the shingles stay in a box of their own because the Janesville landfill will not take them.
On new construction and demolition around Rock County it is often the first container on site, taking framing offcuts, packaging and the mixed debris that comes out before the heavy demolition starts. Knocking a building down in Janesville needs a Building Division demolition permit first — $132 for a residential structure — and we will ask whether you have it.
Weight, swaps and long jobs
Four to five tons is included. Jobs that run for weeks usually work on a swap schedule — we drop an empty when we pull the full one, so the site never waits. Tell us the expected duration when you book and we will set the rhythm. Hauling in Janesville's residential zones is allowed only between 6 am and 9 pm, so swaps happen in daylight.
Suitability
Is the 30 yard the right size for you?
Rough working figures. Weight, not volume, is what usually decides.
Choose the 30 yard for
- Whole-house renovation to the studs
- New construction and demolition debris
- Large roof tear-offs and double layers (own box)
- Commercial remodels and office strip-outs
- Big estate cleanouts with furniture
Pick a different size for
- Heavy inert loads only — concrete, dirt, rubble belong in a 10 loaded level
- Small residential cleanouts (you will pay for air)
- Sites with no 60 ft straight run for the truck
- Hazardous or banned material of any kind
Placing a 30 yard container on a Rock County property
It needs about 60 feet of straight, level run for the truck and 25 feet of overhead clearance. On your own driveway or lot in Janesville we found no City rule requiring a permit; in a street, alley, sidewalk or terrace the City requires a Dumpster Permit through the Building Division (608-755-3060) — two weeks maximum, barricade and flashing light on the traffic side, off the street in a snow emergency — and the container owner applies, so we file it. Other towns have their own rules — Beloit bars street obstructions with no permit route, most of the rest have a street-privilege permit of some kind. Boards go under the rails as standard, and in winter the spot needs to be plowed. Each town page covers its own code.

30 Yard Dumpster — questions we get asked
Is a 30 yard too big for a house?
For a normal cleanout, yes. For a renovation that strips several rooms to the studs, no — that volume arrives faster than people expect. We will tell you honestly which it is.
Can I do swaps on a 30 yard?
Yes. We pull the full container and drop an empty in the same visit. Contractors with multi-week jobs usually book the first swap at the start.
How much does a 30 yard dumpster weigh when full?
It depends entirely on what is in it. Four to five tons of disposal is included; a 30 full of plaster and tile can exceed that, so we plan heavy loads with you up front.
Do I need a permit for a 30 yard?
We found no City of Janesville rule requiring one on your own driveway or lot. In a street, alley, sidewalk or terrace the City requires a Dumpster Permit — two weeks maximum, barricade and flashing light on the traffic side, and the container has to come off the street in a snow emergency. The rental company is the applicant, so tell us when you book and we file it.
