Roll-off dumpster rental in Stoughton
Approx. 26 road miles north of Janesville, around 40 minutes — Highway 11 to I-39/90, then Highway 51 north.
Stoughton is I-39/90 and Highway 51 north from the yard, about 40 minutes, and next morning as a rule. It was founded in 1847 on 800 acres "nestled in a large bend of the Catfish River (now the Yahara)" by Luke Stoughton, a Vermonter from the Janesville area, and by 1900 three-quarters of the town was of Norwegian descent.
"Nearly half of Stoughton's housing stock was constructed either before 1940 or since 1990," the city's plan says, with over 20% from the 1990s alone — so the work splits between pre-war gut jobs and first-round remodels on 1990s subdivisions, with 66.7% of homes owner-occupied (Census).
Local knowledge
Getting our bearings in Stoughton
Knowing a city properly is the difference between covering it and showing up with the right box.
- The Yahara River — the city sits in its big bend; T.G. Mandt's wagon works and 17 tobacco warehouses drove the 1885–1917 boom.
- Housing — nearly half pre-1940 or post-1990, with "many smaller and older homes" and a relatively affordable stock (comprehensive plan).
- Employment districts — downtown, Kettle Park West, Industrial Park North, Business Park North and Industrial Park South; manufacturing, education and health are the main sectors.
- John's Disposal collects the carts — half the city Tuesday, half Friday — with Bulk-On-Call included in the annual fee.
- Public Works at 2439 County Road A, (608) 873-6303; City Hall at 207 South Forrest Street, (608) 873-6677.

What comes out of Stoughton properties
Pre-war kitchens, baths and roofs in 15s and 20s, 1990s deck, siding and bath replacements in 15s, whole-house cleanouts in 20s and 30s. Bulk-On-Call takes construction materials only in two 32-gallon containers a month, each under 60 pounds, and code 62-37 says bulky waste "shall not include construction or demolition materials of substantial dimensions." The Yard Waste Site on Collins Road is a $25-a-year resident sticker and "may not be used by commercial contractors," and refuses construction timbers and decking.

Permits, placement and who may haul in Stoughton
Right-of-way — permit required: §64-9(b)(1) says a city permit is required for "any obstruction or encumbrance of a public way, for more than two hours. A dumpster is an example of an obstruction." The conditions at §64-9(b)(3): no more than a third of any street or alley, a temporary fence or barrier at least 3 feet high, yellow flashing beacons at night, gutter flow not blocked, sidewalk traffic not interrupted without the Street Superintendent's approval, and the public way cleaned at the permit holder's expense when done. Public Works and the Streets Division administer it on 608-873-6303; the fee is set by Council resolution and a dumpster-only fee was not published. On your own driveway or lot, no permit was found — and §62-51 wants a six-foot fenced enclosure for dumpsters at apartment buildings of three or more units.
Who may haul: no city hauler licence was found in the business or solid-waste chapters; §62-37 defines the collector as the contractor the Council chooses for the community's carts. Our Stoughton loads are covered on the road and, because Stoughton is in Dane County, can tip at the Dane County landfill (Rodefeld) at 7102 Maahic Way, Madison — $60.10 a ton for mixed refuse, $63 a ton for construction and demolition, Dane County waste only, Monday to Friday 6:30 am to 3:15 pm and Saturday 8 to 10:45 am. A clean tear-out that is at least half recyclable (lumber, metal, cardboard, concrete) goes through the county's C&D recycling building at the $63 rate, so keeping a box to one stream saves money.

How it works
Booking a dumpster in Stoughton
Booking a container here takes one phone call and about five minutes.
- 1
Call and tell us the job
One short conversation. We ask what you are clearing, where the container needs to sit, and how much room the driveway or lot gives us. No forms, no waiting on an email.
- 2
We size it and quote it flat
You get one number covering delivery, the 7-day rental, pickup, disposal and a stated tonnage allowance. If a smaller box does the job we will say so. If it is shingles or concrete, we say up front that it needs its own box.
- 3
Delivered where you want it
The driver walks the spot with you and sets the container square on the driveway, lot or job site, boards under the rails. Same-day in Janesville if you called before noon.
- 4
Load at your own pace
Keep it level with the top rail and keep the banned items out — tires, appliances, electronics, batteries, oil, yard waste in a mixed load. Need a swap mid-job or an early pickup? One call and we are on it.
- 5
We haul it and sort it right
Clean concrete, brick and brush go to the Clean Fill Facility, appliances and metal to the landfill's recycling areas, and the rest to the licensed landfill for that county. You get your driveway back the way you left it.

Local answers
Dumpster rental in Stoughton — common questions
Is Stoughton same-day or next-day?
Next morning as a rule — about 40 minutes up I-39/90 and Highway 51.
Do I need a permit for a dumpster in Stoughton?
Not on your own driveway. In the street or on the terrace, yes — §64-9 names a dumpster as an obstruction needing a Public Works right-of-way permit, barriers and night beacons, and no more than a third of the street.
Does Stoughton restrict who can supply a roll-off?
No city hauler licence was found. The carts belong to the city's contractor; containers are arranged privately.
Can I take my remodel to the city Yard Waste Site?
No — it bans commercial contractors and refuses construction timbers, decking, steel and appliances. The container takes it, and the Dane County landfill prices sorted construction loads at $63 a ton.

Every town we cover
