Residential Dumpster Rental across Rock County and south-central Wisconsin

Housing around Janesville is varied enough that one container does not fit all of it. The pre-war streets of Look West and the Old Fourth Ward want a 10 or a 15 and a driver who knows the alleys; the newer lots on the edge of town and out in Milton and Edgerton have room for a 20; the lake cottages in Delavan and Lake Geneva are gut jobs with nowhere to put a box but the drive. We have placed containers in all of them, and the first thing we ask on the phone is what your driveway looks like.

Most residential jobs are one of three things: a cleanout (garage, attic, basement, a whole house before a move or sale), a remodel (kitchen, bath, flooring), or weather — a roof after hail, a basement after the spring thaw, a fence line after an ice storm. Each wants a different size and a different conversation about weight. The size comparison covers the numbers; the phone call covers your job.

What actually fills a residential container

Garage and estate cleanouts dominate: furniture, boxes, the contents of a shed. Kitchen and bath remodels are next — cabinets, tile, drywall, a tub. Then the Wisconsin-specific stuff: a roof that needs its own box because the Janesville landfill refuses shingles, a patio of broken concrete that goes to the Clean Fill yard, and the brush pile the City only collects twice a year.

The City of Janesville collects household carts itself but publishes no bulky-item pickup, and its own list of what the carts will not take covers appliances, furniture, concrete, demolition and building debris, dirt, gravel, electronics, tires and yard waste. Bagged yard waste goes out twice a year — 4 to 8 May and 30 November to 4 December in 2026. Anything bigger, heavier or sooner than that is what a residential roll-off is for.

Driveway placement, street permits and where the box goes

On your own driveway or private lot in Janesville we found no City rule requiring a permit. Boards go under the rails to protect concrete and pavers, and the driver sets the container square with the door facing the way you want to load. If the only option is the street, alley, sidewalk or terrace, the City requires a Dumpster Permit through the Building Division at City Hall (608-755-3060): two weeks maximum, flush to the curb and no more than 8 feet into the road, 60 feet back from any cross street, a barricade with a flashing yellow light on the traffic side, and off the street during a snow emergency until plowing is done. The rental company has to be the applicant, so tell us when you book and we file it.

The other towns differ. Beloit's code bars obstructing the street and has no container permit route at all; Milton, Edgerton and Brodhead have street-privilege permits with bonds, Delavan and Elkhorn with insurance and a fee; Stoughton names a dumpster as a street obstruction needing a permit; Fort Atkinson has its own "Get a Dumpster Permit" page. Each town page spells out what that town's code says.

Suitability

Is residential dumpster rental the right call?

The fastest way to get this right is to check the two lists below against what is actually in your pile.

Good fits for this service

  • Garage, attic, basement and whole-house cleanouts
  • Kitchen, bath and flooring remodels
  • Moving, downsizing and estate cleanouts
  • Storm debris, fences and big yard cleanups
  • Furniture, mattresses and bulky junk

Send these somewhere else

  • Paint, solvents, fuel, propane and pool chemicals — the Rock County Clean Sweep takes those (608-757-5588)
  • Tires, batteries, electronics and appliances — banned from Wisconsin landfills
  • Asbestos or suspected asbestos material
  • A box that has to sit in the street without the town's permit

Residential dumpster rental — the Wisconsin specifics

Wisconsin bans a long list from the landfill under state law: tires, major appliances, electronics, lead-acid batteries, waste oil and oil filters, yard waste, and cardboard, cans, bottles and paper. Keep those out of the container or expect them pulled out and charged. The Janesville landfill adds asphalt shingles, concrete and asphalt to its own refused list, which is why roofing and slab jobs get a box of their own. Fridges, freezers, air conditioners and dehumidifiers carry a $15 fee at the landfill; washers, dryers, water heaters and stoves are free to drop. The guides cover what goes where.

Answers

Residential Dumpster Rental — your questions answered

Will the dumpster damage my driveway?

Not if it is set properly. Boards go under the rails as standard on paved drives, and the driver will tell you before delivery if a surface looks like it needs more than that. In the spring thaw a gravel or lawn spot can be soft — tell us and we will pick a firmer one.

Can I put the dumpster on the street instead?

In Janesville, only with the City's Dumpster Permit, which we apply for: two weeks maximum, barricade and flashing light, off the street in a snow emergency. Beloit has no permit route and bars obstructions outright; most other towns on our list have a street-privilege permit of some kind. The driveway is always simpler.

What size do most homeowners end up renting?

A 20 yard for cleanouts and multi-room remodels, a 10 or 15 for a single room or a garage. Say what the job is and we will size it on the call.

Can I put old appliances in the dumpster?

No — major appliances are banned from Wisconsin landfills. Fridges, freezers, air conditioners and dehumidifiers go to the Janesville landfill's recycling area at $15 each; washers, dryers, stoves and water heaters are free there. Ask when you book and we will tell you the simplest route.

How long can I keep the container?

7 days as standard. If the job runs on, call or text before pickup and we extend it at a daily rate.

Do you serve outside Janesville?

Yes — Beloit and the Rock County towns same-day, and out to Whitewater, Fort Atkinson, Delavan, Elkhorn and Lake Geneva in the east and Stoughton, Oregon, Brodhead and Monroe in the north and west. Each town has its own page, and four of them — Beloit, Delavan, Elkhorn and Monroe — license the haulers that work inside their limits; we say so plainly on each page.
