Roll-off dumpster rental in Fort Atkinson

Approx. 21 road miles north-east of Janesville, around 32 minutes — Highway 11 to Highway 26 north, straight into town on Janesville Avenue.

Fort Atkinson is Highway 26 north from the Janesville side, about 32 minutes from the yard, and usually next morning — same afternoon when a truck is already heading up Highway 26. It is a town of about 12,500 on the Rock River, 68.5% owner-occupied (Census), with more than half its housing built before 1970 and nearly 30% before 1940.

The city is unusually clear about containers: temporary dumpsters go on the owner's asphalt or concrete for up to 30 days, and a street placement needs the city's exemption form. John's Disposal has run the carts since 1 January 2026.

Local knowledge

Getting our bearings in Fort Atkinson

Knowing a city properly is the difference between covering it and showing up with the right box.

  • Fort HealthCare is the largest employer with over 1,000 staff; Nasco, Spacesaver, Jones Dairy Farm, On-Cor Frozen Foods, Opportunities Inc. and the Fireside Dinner Theatre are the other big names.
  • Old housing — 28% built in 1939 or earlier, 56% before 1970 and only 0.4% since 2010 (comprehensive plan).
  • The Rock River runs through town; the city even splits its brush pickup into north and south of the river.
  • Dairy heritage — Hoard's Dairyman since 1885, the Hoard Historical Museum and the National Dairy Shrine; Fort Koshkonong was built here in 1832.
  • Building and Zoning is at the Municipal Building, 101 North Main Street, (920) 397-9901; Public Works on (920) 397-9909.

What comes out of Fort Atkinson properties

Kitchens, baths, basements and roofs in pre-war houses in 15s and 20s, whole-house cleanouts in 20s and 30s, and teardown work — the raze permit is $50 per one- or two-family structure. Code 86-36 says material from demolishing and remodeling buildings is not classified as refuse, and John's one free bulk pickup a month takes "no loose construction materials" — only what fits a 32-gallon can under 60 pounds, and "not a substitute for full-scale remodeling." The compost site on Bark River Drive refuses construction debris, concrete and contractor landscape waste.

Permits, placement and who may haul in Fort Atkinson

On your own property: the city's "Get a Dumpster Permit" page says temporary dumpsters should be placed on the resident's property on asphalt or concrete, and may not be at a residence for more than 30 days.

In the street: "in certain situations" a dumpster may go in the street in front of a home — apply through the city's online form if you qualify for an exemption (no driveway, a driveway too steep, low branches or power lines, or another reason), and city staff respond within five business days. The fee is not stated. The code behind it is 90-46(a) (no occupying or obstructing a street unless authorized by the council), 90-46(b) (the City Engineer may authorize construction materials in the street in front of the premises, half the width at most, lit at night) and 90-47 (no storing property on a street or alley). Tell us when you book and we will line the delivery up with the approval.

Who may haul: no city hauler licence was found in the business or solid-waste chapters. Code 86-38 says collection is provided by the city through a contract collector, and extra or commercial waste may be collected for an agreed fee. Our loads are covered on the road; they tip at the Janesville landfill ($46 a ton) or a DNR-licensed private landfill such as Deer Track Park in Watertown, which does not publish its fees.

Summarized from the city's published code and web pages as read in October 2026. Codes change — confirm with the department listed before you rely on it.

How it works

Booking a dumpster in Fort Atkinson

Booking a container here takes one phone call and about five minutes.

  1. 1

Call and tell us the job

One short conversation. We ask what you are clearing, where the container needs to sit, and how much room the driveway or lot gives us. No forms, no waiting on an email.

  2. 2

We size it and quote it flat

You get one number covering delivery, the 7-day rental, pickup, disposal and a stated tonnage allowance. If a smaller box does the job we will say so. If it is shingles or concrete, we say up front that it needs its own box.

  3. 3

    Delivered where you want it

The driver walks the spot with you and sets the container square on the driveway, lot or job site, boards under the rails. Same-day in Janesville if you called before noon.

  4. 4

    Load at your own pace

Keep it level with the top rail and keep the banned items out — tires, appliances, electronics, batteries, oil, yard waste in a mixed load. Need a swap mid-job or an early pickup? One call and we are on it.

  5. 5

We haul it and sort it right

Clean concrete, brick and brush go to the Clean Fill Facility, appliances and metal to the landfill's recycling areas, and the rest to the licensed landfill for that county. You get your driveway back the way you left it.

Local answers

Dumpster rental in Fort Atkinson — common questions

Is Fort Atkinson same-day or next-day?

Usually next morning — about 32 minutes up Highway 26. Ask; a truck heading that way in the afternoon can make it same-day.

Do I need a permit for a dumpster in Fort Atkinson?

Not on your own asphalt or concrete for up to 30 days. A street placement needs the city's exemption form, answered within five business days — we will handle it with you.

Does Fort Atkinson restrict who can supply a roll-off?

No city hauler licence was found. The carts are the city contractor's; containers are arranged privately.

Can John's bulk pickup take my renovation debris?

No loose construction materials — only a 32-gallon can under 60 pounds, and the city says bulk service is not a substitute for a remodel. A container is.
