How a roll-off rental works
You call, describe the job and the address, and get a flat price that covers delivery, a 7-day rental, pickup and disposal up to a stated tonnage. The truck delivers an open-top container to your driveway, lot or job site, you load it level with the top rail, and you call when it is full. Pickup is usually next day. Same-day delivery is routine in Janesville, Beloit and the Rock County towns when you call before noon; the Walworth, Jefferson, Dane and Green County towns are usually next morning. The yard is at 1741 Adel St on the south side of the city, so there is no long haul to plan around.
Choosing a size
Count the job in pickup loads — about 3 for a 10 yard, 4–5 for a 15, 6 for a 20, 9 for a 30, 12 for a 40 — then check the weight. Concrete, brick, shingles, plaster and tile fill a container's tonnage long before it looks full, so they go level in a 10 and, in Janesville, in a box of their own, because the City landfill refuses shingles, concrete and asphalt in a mixed load. Everything else is a question of driveway length: the 10 is about 14 feet long, the 15 about 16, and the 20, 30 and 40 share a 22-foot footprint, with every size needing about 60 feet of straight run for the truck and 25 feet overhead. The sizing guide has the full table.
What the City of Janesville collects, and what it does not
The City's Operations Division collects trash and recycling itself from residential properties of four units or fewer, in City-issued carts, for $176.08 a year on the utility bill. The carts will not take appliances, auto parts, furniture, concrete, demolition and building debris, dirt, gravel, sand, stone, electronics, hazardous or medical waste, lead-acid batteries, liquids, used oil, tires or yard waste. The City publishes no bulky-item or large-item pickup at all — furniture and appliances go to the landfill, where residents can drop up to 96 gallons a trip free — and no citywide clean-up week. Bagged yard waste and bundled brush are collected curbside twice a year, 4 to 8 May and 30 November to 4 December 2026, in paper bags under 50 pounds with brush bundles no longer than 4 feet.
Between those weeks, the Compost Site and Clean Fill Facility off Black Bridge Road just east of Highway 51 takes grass, leaves and garden debris free for residents with ID, and brush, stumps, concrete, brick and clean lumber at $6 a cubic yard for residents and $8 for non-residents, Monday to Friday 8 am to 7 pm and Saturday 8 am to 1 pm in season. Household hazardous waste — paint, solvents, chemicals — goes to Rock County Clean Sweep (608-757-5588, registration required), which runs on 13 June 2026 at the Beloit DPW and 29 August 2026 at the Rock County DPW garage in Janesville. The City provides no dumpster or roll-off service; a container is a private hire.
Placement and permits in Janesville
On your own driveway or lot we found no City permit requirement. Boards go under the rails as standard, and ordinance 22-5 wants debris in the container rather than piled on the lot in public view. In a street, alley, sidewalk or terrace the City requires its Dumpster Permit, published through the Building and Planning Divisions at City Hall, 18 North Jackson Street (Building Division, 608-755-3060): two weeks maximum, the dumpster owner as applicant, company name on the box, out of traffic lanes and illegal parking spots, flush to the curb and no more than 8 feet into the roadway, 60 feet back from any cross street, a Type II or III barricade or drum with a flashing yellow light on the traffic side, 11 feet left clear in an alley, and off the public way during a snow emergency until plowing is done. The ordinance behind it is 34-173, with the Chief of Police or a designee as the issuer under 34-175. No fee is published, so we confirm it when we file. Hauling in residential zones is allowed only between 6 am and 9 pm (30-63(d)), which is why we schedule residential drops in daylight.
Who may haul, and the demolition paperwork
Every hauler moving more than 20 tons a year in Wisconsin needs a DNR solid waste collection and transportation licence under NR 502.06 — $77 plus $33 a vehicle, renewed each October — and must cover every load. Janesville adds no general hauler licence or franchise; the only City permit is ordinance 30-42, an annual City Clerk permit to tip at the City landfill by hire, $110 for the first vehicle and $60 for each additional one. Beyond the city line the rules are set town by town, not by the counties: Beloit (ordinance 17.50), Delavan (§8-3-7), Elkhorn (11.06(15)) and Monroe (§8-3-6) license haulers by ordinance, Brodhead requires haulers to hold their municipal and state approvals, and the rest publish no hauler licence. The town-by-town guide quotes each one, and every town page says what applies there.
Demolition adds paperwork on top. Any demolition in Janesville needs a Building Division permit — $132 for a residential structure, $100 for minor interior work, $165 for a commercial building up to 20,000 square feet. Wisconsin's asbestos rule (NR 447) typically exempts one-to-four-unit homes from DNR notification, but a commercial demolition needs an inspection and a notice through the DNR's ARDN system at least 10 working days before work starts, with fees from $135 to $1,325. Asbestos never goes in a roll-off; the landfill takes it only with prior approval from the Solid Waste Manager (608-755-3110).
What goes in and what stays out
In: household junk, furniture, construction debris, drywall, lumber, siding, fence panels, metal, and concrete, brick or tile loaded level in a 10 of their own. Out, by state law (Wis. Stat. 287.07): lead-acid batteries, major appliances, waste oil and oil filters, yard waste, tires, electronics, and cardboard, cans, bottles, paper and plastic containers. Out, by the Janesville landfill's own rules: liquids, asphalt shingles, concrete, asphalt and yard waste in a mixed load. Out everywhere: paint, solvents, fuel, propane, chemicals, medical waste and asbestos. Fridges, freezers, air conditioners and dehumidifiers carry a $15 fee at the landfill; washers, dryers, stoves and water heaters are free to drop. The full guide says where each banned item goes instead.
Loading, pickup and booking
Load level with the top rail — an over-full or uncovered container cannot be transported legally and the driver will have to leave it. Distribute heavy material across the floor rather than at one end. Keep the path clear for pickup; you do not need to be home. Call or text before the pickup date if you need more time, and before the load goes over the weight line if you think it might — a planned second haul is cheaper than a surprise at the scale.
To book, call (608) 530-0711, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Have the address, the material and a rough quantity ready. You will have a flat price and a delivery window before you hang up.
